New President fo CAS

Jane Kirk is the new President of the Costa Animal Society.  She was elected at the organisation’s AGM last month when Wendy Thorne stood down after six years in the role.

Jane, a professional librarian from Nottingham, lives between Torrox and Cómpeta and has been CAS’s vicepresident for the last two years.

During that time, she has taken over responsibility for the CAS website and launched a monthly newsletter which is emailed to over 400 supporters of the voluntary group. She has also worked closely with a similar group in the Netherlands, HzH, which has now homed over 200 CAS dogs with Dutch and German families.

As president, Jane has committed herself to forging strong links with other animal charities, as well as the Spanish community and other ex-patriot groups.

She says this will offer the possibility of increased funding and lead to the active participation of more people. Expanding the network of foster families, who care for an animal while a permanent home is found, is also a priority.

Wendy Thorne, meanwhile, has become CAS’s vice-president and will be continuing to work with the stray and abandoned dogs which come to the group’s attention.

Spanish dogs like snow

This is Minnie pictured romping in the snow in the garden of her new home in the Netherlands.

She was fostered for 18 months by Anne Wakelam, a Costa Animal Society volunteer in the La Viñuela area and was found a permanent home with a Dutch couple who visit the area on holiday.

Minnie liked the snowy conditions so much that last month she went on her first skiing holiday to Austria!

Not bad for one of five pups which were left at the local vet to be put to sleep, making the work of the CAS volunteers so worthwhile.

New discount card for members

CAS is launching a discount card for members.

When the annual membership fees fall due on June 1, supporters of the voluntary group will be pleased to find that the rates remain unchanged at €25 per person or €35 for a couple. They will also receive the new discount card which will gain them five to ten per cent discount from participating retailers.

The list of outlets taking part in the scheme will be long, comprehensive and geographically wide-ranging and it should not be long before CAS members recoup the membership fee - and more.

Businesses will not pay to be included in the list but will in theory see an increase in custom as CAS members show preference for their goods and services. With over 300 members, that’s a potentially valuable addition to any customer base, CAS says. The society will supply a window sticker announcing that they are part of the scheme and the business name will be included in members’ literature, as well as on the CAS website and blog.

Anyone wanting to join CAS and any businesses interested in participating in the discount card scheme should contact Jane Kirk on (+34) 616 530 071 or email her here.

Lazy dog-walker fined and disqualified

We’ve all seen it. A dog being “walked” by an owner who is riding a moped or driving a car. Now, one man in the UK has paid the price for his laziness.

The 23-year-old was stopped by police in County Durham as he drove his car with his lurcher dog on a lead through the window. Last month, he was found guilty of two offences under the Road Traffic Act and fined £124. He was also given three penalty points on his driving licence but as he already had nine for speeding and insurance offences, the total of 12 points meant that he was disqualified for six months.

That’s a heavy price to pay for not bothering to exercise a pet properly.

The Costa Animal Society is always looking for loving homes for stray and abandoned animals but emphasises that a cat or dog is a responsibility and a commitment. Dogs especially need daily, supervised exercise but trailing one alongside a car or bike is not the way to do it…

Can you help CAS?

We know times are tough but, sadly, that does not prevent the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. This, in turn, costs money which is as tight for CAS as it is for everyone.

However, if you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.
