Help CAS without trying

There are now two ways to help raise funds for the Costa Animal Society without even trying!

First, with on-line shopping increasing in popularity, CAS has joined a Webshop which pays the charity either a fixed amount or a percentage of the price on every purchase. More than 150 favourite stores are participating in this fund-raising initiative, including many well-known UK high street names from Amazon and Asda, through M&S and Next, to Waterstones and Zaavi. And the best bit is that you’ll pay exactly the same price as you would by going directly to the company’s website, and sometimes less than the price charged in their UK branches. So everyone wins!

For shopping on-line, please click here to visit the website and browse through the stores to discover how much CAS will benefit from buying goods this way.

The second way is the result of a tie-up with Europa Network which supplies telephone and Internet connections. The company will pay CAS €10 for every new client who signs up for their services, plus an on-going donation of ten per cent of whatever is spent on phone calls.

Soltalk is happy to recommend Europa Network.

We have used them for several years.
Unlike many low-cost phone companies, there is no prefix number to dial – the company puts some gizmo in the exchange and you would not know you were using them until their very reasonable bill comes in!

Europa Network has no joining fee or minimum monthly spend and offers fully itemised bills in English plus Englishspeaking support from their call centre on the Costa del Sol.

Full details are available at their website here and don’t forget to mention CAS when you sign up.

Thanks to all those who help generate cash which means more help for abandoned and abused animals.

3 French hens,
2 Muscovy ducks
and
a turkey retiree

OK, so we lied about the three French hens but CAS was asked to find new homes for the others during December.

Luckily, vicepresident Jane Kirk immediately thought of the Noah’s Ark in Sedella where Jan Addison agreed to add them to her own ducks, geese and chickens.

The two ducks are reported to have settled in well and Jan hopes that, come the spring, the drake will father some ducklings to expand the flock!

Meanwhile, the elderly turkey has survived the Christmas dinner table and entered a serene retirement. He is to be found every morning waiting for his breakfast by the food hopper before another busy day strutting around the yard.

While CAS deals mainly with cats and dogs, it has in the past homed iguanas, parrots, rabbits and pot bellied pigs, plus a snake or two. However, the volunteers emphasise that this should not be interpreted as a challenge for them to home ever-more exotic species!

Fund
raisers

Volunteers from the Costa Animal Society managed to raise a terrific €492.40 for the charity’s funds at the Cómpeta Christmas Market during December. Amongst the prizes on the tombola was a night’s bed and breakfast at the Hotel Cortijo Amaya in Torrox Costa.

Thanks also to Jan and David Neale who once again arranged a Charity Christmas dinner dance at the Hotel Al Andalus in Maro in aid of CAS and Cudeca. The evening raised a total of €480 for CAS and the committee would like to thank everyone for their support.

CAS’s own Glitz and Glamour Ball, also at the Hotel Al Andalus, was a roaring success with a record turnout despite the recession. Thanks to all who attended and especially to the many sponsors whose generosity helped to raise almost €3,000.

Running
for CAS

Congratulations to Simon Wilkinson of Almuñécar who raised €350 for the Costa Animal Society in December by completing the Granada half-marathon.

The 34-year-old from Huddersfield ran the race as part of his training programme for a full marathon in the UK later this year. “Done!” said Simon, once he caught his breath. “Twenty-one kilometres of sheer torture but I did it! The race closed at 2 hours and 30 minutes and I finished with 26 seconds to spare!”

Simon explained that CAS had been helping to re-home some cats for his wife and himself “so I thought it only fair that I try to give something back.”

Thanks to Simon for his efforts and to all those who sponsored him.

Fund raising

No fewer than 24 people have contacted the Costa Animal Society to ask for help in re-homing their pets when they return to the UK during January. With over 100 dogs and puppies already on the books in mid- December, it is highly unlikely that CAS will be able to help all of them.

CAS again reminds owners it takes just over six months to prepare a dog for transportation to the UK and the cost is not prohibitive. Forward planning is required and the vet can provide assistance. So if leaving Spain is a possibility this year, CAS urges you to think about your pet’s future sooner rather than later.

Full details of the process can be found on the CAS website which can be found here.

Can you help CAS?

We know times are tough but, sadly, that does not prevent the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. This, in turn, costs money which is as tight for CAS as it is for everyone.

However, if you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.
