Jackie
Todd

The Costa Animal Society is very sad to note the sudden death of Jackie Todd in May.

Jackie was one of the great animal lovers and homed many hundreds of cats and dogs which she took into her house as waifs and strays.

It was very unusual to see her socialising around Nerja without being accompanied by a few of the latest kittens and puppies which had found their way to her doorstep.

Jackie also wrote about her love for animals and donated the profits from her book, Spanish Pointers, to CAS.

Her last book, Dog Days in Andalucía, was published by Random House in April and has received international recognition.

Jackie and husband Stephen also enjoyed their own menagerie of cats and dogs at their home in Frigiliana where they lived for many years.  The respect in which the Todds are held by their Spanish acquaintances and neighbours was evidenced by the number of them who joined her British friends for her internment in the village cemetery.

CAS offers its condolences to Stephen and other members of Jackie’s family, and thanks her for the invaluable work she undertook with needy animals over many years.

Residents Day

The Costa Animal Society is used to dealing with dogs, but the focus of attention at Nerja’s Residents’ Day in late April was hot dogs – dozens of them – which were cooked and sold by CAS volunteers to the hundreds of local people who turned out in the warm sunshine.

CAS was one of around 40 local groups and organisations which was able to showcase its work and raise funds at the same time during the annual event in Plaza España. Alongside the snack sales, the volunteers ran the traditional tombola and between them raised a terrific €564.

Add to this the €349 made at Nerja’s Sunday Market the same morning, and, all in all, it was a good day for the dogs, hot and otherwise!

Please help with rehoming costs

The Costa Animal Society was founded in 1986 for the sole purpose of helping abandoned and maltreated animals. As the years have passed, however, the volunteers have been prevailed upon to find new homes for animals owned by people who find it necessary to sever ties with their dogs and cats.

Circumstances change, CAS understands, but the time and effort this takes impinges upon the efforts put into caring for genuinely abandoned and homeless animals. For this reason, anyone asking CAS to re-home their own pet will now be asked for a donation of €25 before the animal’s details are added to the organisation’s website.

Such payments can be made at the CAS office in Nerja, or directly into the CAS bank account, making sure the owner’s and the animal’s names are quoted by the bank. CAS’s bank is Cajamar, the account name is Costa Animal Society, and the account number is 3058 0728 03 2720100283.

Once this has been done, CAS will follow its set procedure to find a new loving home for the animal. The owner will be sent a form to complete with as much detail about the pet as possible. This is returned to CAS along with several digital photos, and the information is uploaded to the CAS website and forwarded to various other partner groups. The owner must advise CAS if he or she manages to find a new home in the meantime.

Fuller details are available at the CAS website.

A night of tropical splendour

Frequent Flyers

This is Nicole Brouwers, a frequent flyer to the Netherlands, holding Lucy before the two flew out of Málaga recently on the way to meet Lucy’s new Dutch family. Lucy is the 23rd Spanish dog which Nicole has accompanied on flights from Málaga and is the 193rd to fly north through the arrangement between the Costa Animal Society and its Dutch counterpart Hond zoek Huis (HzH).

If you are planning a trip to the Netherlands and would be prepared to care for a CAS dog during your journey, please get in touch with CAS’s President Jane Kirk (pictured) who, after taking 60 dogs to Málaga airport to catch flights, knows the procedures inside out!

Jane can be contacted on (+34) 616 539 071 or by email here. Pictures of all the dogs which have found homes through the CAS-HzH alliance can be found at CAS's blog here.

Can you help CAS?

We know times are tough but, sadly, that does not prevent the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. This, in turn, costs money which is as tight for CAS as it is for everyone.

However, if you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.
