Fund-
raising coordinator wanted

The Costa Animal Society has a vacancy for a fund raising coordinator.

The work, which like all CAS members’ input is offered on a voluntary basis, involves maintaining the charity’s programme of events and pursuing sponsorship deals to generate funds. CAS must raise all of the funds it requires because it receives no income or grants from any governmental or other body. It is therefore essential that a professional and innovative approach is taken in order to maximise potential donations and revenues.

Duties, some of which may be delegated, include arranging monthly social events and negotiating the best deal possible with venues, booking entertainment for such events, arranging coach excursions and obtaining raffle prizes.

It also covers generating sponsorship for all areas of CAS’s activities and producing publicity material in the form of posters and fliers. Close liaison with members of the CAS committee is essential at all times.

As CAS is based in Nerja, proximity to the town is desirable, while computer literacy is essential along with plenty of ideas and enthusiasm. With forward planning, this need not be a timeconsuming role and would perhaps suit a retired resident with some spare time, plus an interest in charity work and animals.

Anyone who is interested in the position, or feels they could provide a supporting role to the fund raising coordinator, is invited to have a no-obligation chat with Richard on (+34) 95 203 7095 or Jane on (+34) 616 530 071.

Record month for CAS

March proved to be a very successful month for the Costa Animal Society with new homes found for a total of 41 dogs. This was a record for CAS and underlines that it is extremely rare for dogs on the charity’s website not to be re-homed.

Included was Jenny, the 13th dog this year to have been re-homed by CAS’s Dutch partners HzH. She flew to meet her new owners in the Netherlands, although her first priority on landing was to find a snack, as the picture on the left shows!

She is the third of four puppies and her siblings Pip and Bully left Spain earlier this year. The fourth puppy, Bessie is staying with Lorraine who found them when they were only days old and bottle-fed them until they were ready to be re-homed.

Despite March’s success, CAS is always desperate to find more volunteer fosterers who can care for dogs on a temporary basis until a permanent new home is found.

There is already a dedicated band of wonderful fosterers helping the charity but the dogs needing short-term bed and board always outnumber them. If you could become a fosterer, have a chat with Wendy on (+34) 95 203 7095.

Of course, CAS is always delighted to hear from people who can take on a pet permanently.

However, some may be put off by the thought of coping with the antics of a young puppy, but might instead consider an older, mature dog.

Recently, such a dog turned up in La Herradura (pictured right) and is now looking for a new home.

She is believed to have come from Ciudad Real south of Madrid but how she came south is a mystery as she has no microchip to identify her.

Equally, for young families a lively podenco could be the answer.

These lovely dogs are loyal, clean, full of fun, good with children and make an ideal family pet, so should merit serious consideration.

Gucci, for example, (pictured left) is one year old and needs to find a home after her family moved to Dubai.

She would make a great companion for someone.

If you would share your home with a CAS dog, please contact Wendy on (+34) 95 203 7095.

Cómpeta dog show

The first of the Costa Animal Society’s annual dog shows for 2010 will he held in Cómpeta on Saturday, May 29.

Once again, Scruffs Cómpeta will take place at the Pavo Real and promises another afternoon of family fun. Last year’s event attracted entrants and stall holders from Spain, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands and raised almost €2,000 for the charity. More than 60 dogs participated and the Best Pedigree in Show award went to Pippa (pictured right), owned by Caroline Hicks of Taurus Real Estate in Sayalonga, the business which is the 2010 event’s main sponsor.

This year, dogs can be entered in any of 11 classes ranging from Best Pedigree and non-Pedigree Dogs and Puppies to Fancy Dress and Best Six Legs – those of the dog plus those of its owner!

Full details appear on the CAS website here.

Registration begins at 1pm with judging starting at 2pm. Entry will be €5 per dog per class. In addition to the competition ring, there will be stalls, a giant raffle, bars, a barbeque and plenty of shaded areas.

Further sponsorship opportunities are still available. Please contact Jane Kirk on (+34) 616 530 071 for details.

Can you help CAS?

We know times are tough but, sadly, that does not prevent the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. This, in turn, costs money which is as tight for CAS as it is for everyone.

However, if you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.
