Summer has arrived and with it our latest rescue, Elvis the donkey, pictured right.

He came to us in mid- June after living with his 80-year-old owner since 1989 but sadly he could no longer look after his donkey.

Elvis is 31-years-old and has a lovely temperament. His owner was sad to see him go but is happy to let him go to a nice new home in the sanctuary and hopes to be able to visit him soon. Elvis was extremely well behaved when we collected him and he has settled in without any fuss in the sanctuary.

He looks very similar to one of our oldest residents, Woody, but Elvis is a bit bigger.

Woody recently suffered a fit which caused him to revert to his old behaviour of walking in circles as he used to work on a carousel at feria grounds. We have moved Woody to a separate pen and needless to say we are monitoring his condition.

Piglets born

After a long wait, our pregnant pig finally produced two piglets who thankfully have been accepted by their mother. They are a mix of pot-belly, Spanish pig and wild boar, come and visit them before they get bigger.

Our last set of piglets were looked after by the late Jackie Todd who helped us immeasurably over the years looking after puppies and kittens abandoned at the sanctuary. She was also always on hand to give us advice on how best to care for any other tiny animal too young to care for itself. She will be greatly missed by all at the sanctuary.

Chica, our pregnant donkey, is extremely close to her due date now and the foal is imminent. We have prepared a special pen for the birth and our volunteers are working extra hard to make sure it is spotlessly clean. Meanwhile Petra and Chocky have been wrapped up to protect against the biting flies who seem to pick on them every summer. Chocky isn’t particularly keen on his fly rug but it’s for the best.

Another annual summer job is shearing our rescued sheep called Chuleta. After several attempts we were finally able to lure her into a pen where lots of helpers undertook the arduous task of shearing her. They all did a great job and she is so much happier with her summer haircut.

Last month's featured rescue, Pepe the mule, has been homed locally in Nerja and our giant baby donkey Trevor has changed foster homes. Another rescued animal that passed quickly through the gates on its way to a new home, a tiny baby goat, was saved from a pack of dogs by a brave local lady and brought to the sanctuary. Through our contacts we were able to find the little kid a home within hours.

Summer opening hours

We have specially extended our visitor hours for July and August. We will be open from 10-2pm and again in the evening from 5- 8pm so you can beat the heat and visit the donkeys when it has cooled down.

As the schools head towards the summer holidays we have been busy with field trips, 267 children attended our school program this month and our disabled riding program made the Spanish press again. The publicity is great and the progress the kids are making is fantastic.

We are unable to take dogs but we still have two desperately seeking homes, Sampson and Blanca. You can walk them any day, mornings are best as they really appreciate the extra attention. If you can home one of our two final dogs please come and see us in the sanctuary or call us on the numbers below.

Thank yous

Lisa and Hannah for their hard work. Norma Young for her support. A big thank you to all our regular volunteers who have got the sanctuary in fantastic shape for summer.

We are heavily relying on a good summer or face the threat of closure. You can help by visiting the sanctuary and adopting an animal for just €20. You can support an animal for a whole year, the adoption certificates make excellent presents. You can also adopt or set up a direct debit online. See you in the sanctuary soon.

About Us

Our core visitor hours fare 10am to 2pm and 5 to 6pm but In July and August we have extended evening hours 5-8pm. . We are open every day and admission is free. Great fun for kids. Find us on the Soltalk map in square E2. We are on the western edge of town a few minutes walk from the Supersol supermarket next to the Rio Chillar river and its new promenade.

You can bring carrots and feed the donkeys by hand, please remember to break up any larger carrots. Like a city farm we have a variety of other animals that children can meet and learn about including pigs, goats and chickens. If you haven’t been in recently we have improved and expanded the visitor area so come and see us again as you won't recognise the place. Volunteers always needed.

Volunteers are always welcome so if you’d like to help out why not pop in to the sanctuary or give us a call. Not all of the jobs are messy or hands on with the animals as we always need people to meet and greet visitors and show people around.

You can find out more about us, adopt a donkey or donate by card or PayPal at our website or email us.
