HEALTH COVER
IN THE UK
FOR BRITONS
RESIDENT IN SPAIN
British
residents in Spain must now present a Spanish state health insurance
card if they require medical attention in the UK or any other EC
country.
The British Embassy in
Madrid says that the new regulations came into force on April 1, 2008,
and a patient who fails to show the Spanish European Health Insurance
Card (EHIC) could be treated as a private patient while out of Spain
and be charged accordingly.
Those affected by the
regulation fall into three categories.
First are those Britons
who are permanently resident in Spain and are making Spanish social
security contributions.
Second are those
permanent residents who receive a state pension or long term
incapacity benefit from the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions
through the registration of an E121.
And third, are those
living here permanently who receive healthcare while in receipt of a
state pension. The Embassy adds that UK nationals who use an E106 do
not need to apply for the Spanish card but can continue using their
British EHIC.
The Spanish EHIC is
called la Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea and can be applied for at local
social security offices (INSS). The card must be renewed annually.
More information is
available from the UK Government website (click
here) or
by calling (+44) 191 21 81 999.
RENEWING
UK PASSPORTS IN SPAIN
British Citizens
resident in Spain wishing to apply for a new passport, or to renew an
expired passport, must apply direct to Madrid,
not to their local Consulate.
Biometric passports began to be issued from Madrid in May 2006.
A completed
application form should be sent, together with the appropriate fee and
any supporting documents, to the address below.
Note
that fees are now payable only using Mastercard or Visa credit or
debot cards. No other form of payment is acceptable.
Currents fees payable can be found
here. A card authorisation form must be sent with the
application and can be downloaded
here. (Adobe Reader required.)
Application forms and more details can be downloaded
here.
Application
forms and details of fees payable may also be obtained from the British
Consulate in Málaga.
Fuller information can
be found at the British Embassy's website : www.ukinspain.com
Notes : The British
Consulate in Málaga will continue to provide emergency passport
facilities to visitors to Spain who have lost their passports or had
them stolen.British
citizens living in Spain who have lost their passports, had them
stolen or have allowed them to expire, should apply to the Consulate
General in Madrid for a replacement. The Consulate in Málaga
says that applications for emergency passport facilities for a person
living in Spain will only be considered by them in extreme
compassionate cases.
