Sink
or Swim

De Cotta McKenna y Santafé and friends completed a sponsored walk from the Nerja office to The Garden Restaurant in Frigiliana, raising more than €1,000 for Cudeca in the process.

This is part of the firm’s charitable fund raising to mark its 25th Anniversary of providing legal services for English speaking residents, business owners and home owners in southern Spain.

Food and entertainment was laid on by the restaurant and Team España sponsored a water stop along the route.

La Buena
Mesa

We saw the newly opened La Buena Mesa in the Pasaje between C/ Cristo and C/ Pintada, Nerja and thought we’d try some of their gourmet take away food.

They have a wide range of freshly prepared meals such as Lentil casserole, Beef in red wine, Basque style chicken, lasagne and cannelloni, Salmon in either dill or curry sauce to name a few. We tried the Bourguignon beef and it was delicious. Sold in portions from 330gm to 1kg the prices are reasonable too. Telephone (+34) 95 252 4521.

Soltalk’s Sarah Brookes was so impressed with the products from the Andalucia Soap Company – she decided to open a shop in Calle El Barrio 47, Nerja to sell them.

Opening early this month, the shop will carry the full range of over fifty different soaps together with other high quality, completely natural face and skin care products. Your only problem will be deciding which ones to buy!

The Serenaders last concert, By George, celebrating the songs of George & Ira Gershwin at the cultural centre in Nerja was held for the benefit of the Costa Animal Society and raised a total of €500.

CAS would like to thank the cast and Bernie Barr, who is pictured here presenting a cheque to CAS fundraisers, Karen and Mike O’Brien, for their generosity.

Reader Shaun Viney sent us these pictures taken here of a spider and (inset) what he believes may be a Colorado beetle, a serious pest in Britain.

He wonders if any readers may be able to identify them.

Any entomologists out there who know, please email us here.

Tickets are available in advance at all of the shops involved and from the CAS office. A number of the fashions will be for sale after the show, plus discount brand name cosmetics.

Canillas
cats

Roberto, pictured here, having succumbed to liver pate, became the 25th feral cat to fall prey to a Canillas de Albaida animal charity’s live-trap and feral cat sterilization program.

The Caton Animal Trust, CAT, started in August and has gone about its business on the quiet streets of this white washed village of about 1,000 souls, catching and sterilizing feral cats to curb overpopulation.

Now it has opened its own shop, El Gato, to raise funds for its work at 12 Estacion, near Cerezo’s bar and restaurant. It’s open Monday to Friday, 11am to 2pm and offers a wide variety of second-hand goods at cheap prices.

The shop was the brainchild of Kate Morris who is appealing for good quality used women’s clothes, especially European sizes 14-18, men’s clothes, DVDs and gift items, anything that might be recycled for a good cause. Call her at (+34) 95 255 3070 for further information.

The shop also offers hand crafted greeting cards and original art by local painters. All proceeds from El Gato and private donations pay for sterilizing feral felines at Clinica Veterinaria in Cómpeta and for bulk cat food.

Final
lecture

Nerja Decorative & Fine Arts Society will hold its final lecture of the season on May 13 at 6 pm in The Cultural Centre, Nerja.

The lecture is entitled “Kokoschka, Klimt & Schiele” by James Malpas MA Cantab Phil London. By leaving the academic respectability of Vienna’s art establishment in 1898, Klimt and his young followers, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, amongst others, initiated an efflorescence of art nouveau-based and post-impressionist vividness in colour few could have predicted. Eighty years on their work is amongst the most easily recognisable and popular of the century.

How did this happen? What were its aims? Why did it end so swiftly? This lecture provides answers and richly-coloured illustrations.

The lecture is sponsored by Hotel Al-Andalus, Maro. For information on membership, contact Avril Toyne, (+34) 95 864 0176. Other information, Ruth Lucas, (+34) 95 253 4282 or visit their website by clicking here.

Triple
Moon

Triple Moon is the work of three Frigiliana artists, Gill Eardley, Rosie Manton, and Elaine Walker.

Their theme describes the feminine nature of art as an expression of emotion. The paintings and drawings explore the relationship between feeling and the natural world as well as the world of archetypes. The pieces are in watercolour, acrylics, pastels and crayon, and are all at affordable prices.

The exhibition is in the Cultural Centre in Frigiliana, and runs from May 13-26, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm, weekends 10am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm.

Players
raised
€2,500

The Nerja Players are looking back on what they say has been a very successful 20th anniversary year with three first rate performances at the Nerja Cultural Centre which enabled them to donate around €2500 to local charities.

Following December’s sell-out Old Time Music Hall, February saw John Bowkett’s production of An Evening with Cole Porter delighted a capacity audience. In March, Joan Tarver’s production of Alan Bennett’s An Englishman Abroad and a selection from Talking Heads was a huge success, they say.

Neapolitan
cuisine

The idea for Napul’e’ was born on a summer day last year.

Biagio, Salvatore and Luigi ,were sitting over coffee in Nerja when they decided to join their restaurant experiences and to make their dream come true: a typical Neapolitan restaurant.

With an innovative menu, excellent quality products and typical recipes revisited, they see their mission is to delight the palates in a genuine and healthy way at a price accessible to everybody. We

want our customers to live the Neapolitan culinary experience, as for instance that of the Sunday homely lunch, where perfumes, tastes and colours become synonym of Ragù, Mozzarella and Babà, they say.

Passion and devotion combine in our true Neapolitan pizza, unique and inimitable, a symbol of a daily rite suitable for any diet. Napul’e’ is where every day is Sunday and eating becomes a pleasure, they say. Napul’e’ is in Plaza La Marina, Nerja.
