Welcome to the November issue of Soltalk. I must say at this time of year I do miss four seasons....
News, events and happenings in Nerja, Torrox and the surrounding areas.
Russell's British Supermarket
Russell's British supermarket was established in 2006 in Torrox Costa, situated near the Lighthouse. It's come a long way since then, now run by brothers Ross and Kane since 2018 (sons of previous owner). Russell's has seen some big changes in the last year. Ross and Kane have expanded the store, installed new fridges, freezers and shelving, dropped the prices, increased the variety of stock and now open 7 days a week. They have also had a rebrand to reflect their modern store.
Ross and Kane are well known and liked in Torrox, they're excited about the future of the store and looking to grow the business in the coming years. With their friendly and enthusiastic approach it looks like the store will go from strength to strength. Pop along to Russell's and say hi, they're always open to feedback and suggestions, and will order products on request if available. They have some great deals on (see advert on page ?) with Christmas approaching they'll have lots more on offer in the coming weeks. Like them on Facebook to see their latest offers www.facebook.com/russellsbritishstore.
Royal British Legion
Remembrance Day will be particularly poignant this year as we commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. This was one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race with deaths estimated at 7 million civilians and 10 million military personnel. Supposed to be “the war to end all wars” - but sadly we know that was not to be. The centenary is being marked by events all over the UK and in many other countries.
Royal British Legion Nerja Branch, hold their remembrance commemoration on Sunday November 11, at the Al-Andalus Hotel, Maro at 11.35am. This is a nondenominational event. Music will be provided, by the Remembrance Choir with director Tom Robinson. Their beautiful music makes the event especially moving. All are welcome to attend. However, if you would like to join them for lunch afterwards at the Caves Restaurant please contact Vera on 95 296 7200.
Prior to this, on Friday November 9, their annual Poppy Ball will take place at the Caves Restaurant. This great evening raises funds for the 2018 Poppy Appeal. Enjoy a drinks and canapés reception and a three course dinner followed by a raffle and dancing to the fabulous Flying Dolphins. This year they are delighted to welcome the very talented Laura Elen who will entertain with some fitting songs. All are welcome to attend. The price is just €35 per person, however, booking is essential as places are limited. To book please contact David as soon as possible email: email@example.com.

Nerja Players have two events this month, the first on November 6, is titled “With Great Pleasure.” You are invited to bring a reading of your choice to perform. Come solo or with a group. The floor is yours! Do you have a favourite poet or playwright? Perhaps you’d like to gather a group of thespians to read a favourite comedy skit from years past? Or, you’ve always wanted to perform a song from your favourite musical. What about the recitation of a historically memorable speech? November 6 is the perfect opportunity to come and join us in a fun evening. View last year's readings on our YouTube channel at: https://youtu.be/ogVmfDqU5qs
The second event is on November 20, and is a fun evening with Shakespeare called “The Rude Mechanicals.” Hamlet, Othello - you don’t expect The Bard to be a bundle of laughs, but director, Joan Tarver, promises a hilarious experience with her adaptation of scenes from Shakespeare's best-loved comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” A victorious Theseus is about to marry Hippolyta, defeated Queen of the Amazons. Feisty fairies bicker and plot and cause no end of trouble for the Rude Mechanicals - this band of singularly untalented amateurs - as they rehearse a play they hope to perform to celebrate the forthcoming nuptials. Will rival factions reconcile their differences? Can Bottom the Weaver succeed in his bid for stardom? Come and enjoy the fun and frolics! Find out more at www.thenerjaplayers.com

Local News from October 2018
Poetry, wine & music
Last month Nerja Book Centre hosted local author Abigail López Torres, launching her new book El Hada y La Luna. Award winning author, Abigail, recited a selection of her poems, beautifully accompanied by Alfonso Millan Quintana – a talented musician from Málaga. Alfonso serenaded the audience with a selection of songs, one of which was revealed to be the inspiration behind the book itself, El Hada y la Luna by Saurom. The atmosphere in the shop was enchanting with soft lighting and handmade decorations amidst it´s maze of books and full of guests enjoying a glass of wine. This is the first event of this type to be organised and hosted by the Nerja Book Centre and as owner Leslie Hands commented: “Hopefully the first of many”. Leslie also revealed his plans for the future of the shop which include a major refurbishment, as well as many collaborations with different artists – both local and foreign.
It has been over 35 years since Leslie’s dad – Derek first opened the shop and with its vast collection of varied books in many languages, this little gem of a book shop on c/ Granada is still a favourite amongst the local community and visitors from all over the globe.
Feria poster 2018
Nerja Town Hall have announced that the poster entitled “BailARTE”, is the winning work of the 2018 Feria Poster competition. A total of 84 works were received from all parts of Spain and even from Latin America. They were all evaluated by the jury appointed by the town hall. They were then narrowed down into a shortlist of 20, then ten and then five, and finally a winner was declared. Some of the selection criteria were the expressiveness and the symbolic capacity related to the theme, the ability to transmit the message, creativity and artistic quality, and the aesthetics of the work (design, colour and originality). The president of the jury, Mr. Iván Rebolledo, who announced the winner, indicated the difficulty they had among so much work to select just one. We love it!
Can you help CAS?
Is there anybody out there who would be willing to hold the Costa Animal Society (CAS) book stall at Trapiche market, held on Tuesdays from 9.30am until 1.30pm? The money raised on this stall is much needed to help CAS help sick and abandoned animals in Nerja.
CAS do have volunteers willing to help but they don’t have access to a vehicle needed to transport the books, tables, etc. It wouldn’t need to be each week but any help would be gratefully appreciated. If you feel that you could assist CAS, please contact them on 608 876 488. Many thanks.
New Scottish bar
Announcing The Beer Garden, Liz Alpine’s new Scottish Bar on Avda Mediterraneo (corner of c/ Chaparil where the Garden of Eat’n used to be.) Liz told us that the idea was simple: since having two children she’d become more homesick for her native Scotland. Analysing what she really missed it was… friends, football and food! But since here in Nerja she has the great weather, family and friends, all that was really missing was the food and football. So, The Beer Garden is her attempt to remedy that - creating a place with a fun, friendly atmosphere and great home-style Scottish food and drink for everyone to enjoy! Showing Scottish football too of course. And yes before you ask… she will have deep-fried Mars Bars! Oh and Irn Bru of course. She’ll be serving a variety of breakfasts, snacks, lunches and homemade cakes. All food will be homemade and freshly prepared. She will also serve good quality beers and draft cider as well as cocktails. It’s due to open early October, be sure to try it out!

The month before last Nerja lost another well known figure when Glen Alan Conroy (pictured) passed away on August 18. He was part of the Nerja ex-pat community for nearly 20 years, initially working at Speakeasy Bar where many referred to him as “the Little Chef”. He later worked at Rafters Rastro Secondhand Shop. He will be sadly missed by Ann and all who knew him.
