Virgen del Carmen Festival

July 16

July 16 is the day of the Virgen del Carmen. This festival is in honour of the patron saint of sailors and is celebrated in all the municipalities of the Costa del Sol – it is also one of the most beautiful. Surrounded by stunning floral offerings the Virgen del Carmen is taken through the town to the sea in a procession and then placed on a boat. There are fireworks and a large popular moraga accompanied by traditional music and dancing. A moraga is a night-time party, usually held on the beach. A moraga is differentiated from a barbeque in that the food being cooked is espeto (sardines on a stick).
