Hello and welcome to the April edition of Soltalk. April always feels like the beginning of summer as the clocks have just gone forward and the evenings are instantly so much longer! Lovely.
We thought we would have “brexited” (yes I have heard it used as a verb!) by the April issue but no… still nothing decided and may not be before we do the May issue either. Meanwhile those UK citizens living in Spain who haven’t yet applied for residency need to get moving asap! See our news item on the Votes for Life Bill.
And this month is the most important week in the Spanish calendar – Easter. Of course it is not just Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrated here in Spain but the whole week, referred to as Semana Santa or Holy Week. Nearly every day of the week there are processions of elaborately decorated floats with Christ and Mary statues, groups of hood wearing Nazarenos (penitents), and brass bands, walk slowly through the streets, from the Iglesia El Salvador on the Balcón de Europa around the town and back. The statues are decorated with so many flowers that the smell is just amazing as they pass by, mixed with the incense being swung by the priest. It is quite something to experience, and a great time to be in Nerja.
And of course for the English amongst us April 23 is St Georges day although of course it does tend to get ignored by many. Poor old George doesn’t seem to have the same appeal as say St Patrick. I think it might have something to do with Guinness! Perhaps the national drink of the English doesn’t have the same appeal? Anyone for tea?
If you read our article last month about the charity walk from Torrox to Gibraltar you will be pleased to hear that last time we checked the boys were halfway to their target of raising €2000. The walk is starting from Torrox on April 17 so why not go and give them a send off? We will give you the final figures next month.
With all the great weather we enjoy in Andalucia, it was a shame that Nerja Residents Day which was supposed to be on March 24 was postponed until March 31 due to wind and rain. We hope you still managed to attend and had a great time!
Have a great April and enjoy this issue!
