Nerja’s mayor talks of unfair treatment by Madrid

Nerja’s mayor says Madrid is guilty of “unfair and harmful treatment” of the municipality.  José Alberto Armijo claims that central government is trying to charge the town “the exorbitant fee” of €11 million for the use of water.

At the centre of the row is the Nerja’s new water treatment plant and its associated pumping stations all of which became operationally ready in October 2022.  Its construction was understood to be the responsibility of the state, but the transfer of its on-going maintenance to the municipality remains outstanding.

Sr Armijo said that the situation is resulting in millions of litres of dirty water still being pumped into the sea “despite the drought,” he said, adding, “because of the government of Pedro Sánchez.”

The mayor repeated his request for responsibility of the new facility to be transferred to the municipality so that this wasted water could be put to good use.  Meanwhile, he added, the Ministry of Edological Transition intends to charge the town €11 million for its construction.  He described the demand as “unfair, discriminatory and extraordinarily harmful to our people “ after the Government previously described the plant to be in the general interest of the State.
