The body representing municipalities east of Málaga have called for action on a number of important projects including competition of the motorway junction for Caleta de Vélez, a new junction for Benajarafe and El Morche, and a costal rail line from Málaga to Nerja.
The president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquía, Jorge Martín, highlighted, “the lack of railway service in the region and the traffic problems that the Mediterranean highway adds as it passes through the eastern part of the province.”
He called on central government to solve the mobility problems of the Costa del Sol by financing the railway infrastructure “which our province demands” as has been done elsewhere. He emphasised that such action would “open the door to European funds or even public-private collaboration.”
The group has called for the next budget to include competition of A-7 junction at Caleta. At present, the absence of two slip roads means it is impossible for traffic to join the east bound carriageway, while west bound traffic cannot leave the motorway. Sr Martín added that as well as solving access issues, the project would benefit connections with the regional Fire Station, so improving reaction to emergencies in the east of the region.
