Nerja arrests

Seven people have been detained in Nerja on suspicion of thefts from commercial premises and industrial warehouses which began in summer 2022.  Premises in Rincón de La Victoria, Málaga and elsewhere are believed to have been targeted by the gang.  They employed alarm inhibitors amongst tools to break in, while fitting false license plates on the vehicles they used, intended to make identification difficult.

On screen

Elon Musk’s sister Tosca was in Nerja last month shooting scenes for her forthcoming feature film Wallbanger, based on the novel by Alice Clayton.  The Balcón de Europa as well as El Salon and Calahonda beaches were amongst locations visited.  For several weeks, the town had been helping to bring 70 of the project’s production staff to the coast.

Funeral home

Tenders have been invited for the equipping and operation of Torrox’s new funeral home.  Mayor Óscar Medina said last month that the construction was almost complete and its establishment will negate mourners having to travel to either Nerja or Vélez-Málaga.  The building has a central patio with a ground floor of 360 square metres plus a 50 square metre basement.

Vehicle grant

Nerja’s Taller de Amistad workshop for the disabled has received a grant from the Town Hall.  The €35,000 has gone towards the cost of a van which will help the group travel to the various areas in which they participate.  The cash accounts for almost two-thirds of the purchase price.

Málaga transport

Public transport in the city of Málaga set new records in August and September with over five million passengers each month.  The recent National Statistics Institute data has been attributed to the arrival of the Metro system in the city centre and the increasing cost of fuel for motorists.  Several discounts are operating on Málaga’s public transport systems until the end of the year.

Flight tragedy

An instructor and pilot on a night training flight from Vélez-Málaga aerodrome died last month after their aircraft crashed in Almería.  An investigation opened after wreckage was found in a remote, mountainous area in the Cabo de Gato natural park.  Both men were reported to be in their 20s.

Bather died

A bather died on Nerja’s El Salón beach on October 5.  Several witnesses raised the alarm when the victim, a man in his 70s, was seen to be struggling in the water.  Despite the efforts of the emergency services, he died at the scene.

Footpath extended

Another section of the future 170 km coastal path from Nerja to Manilva opened last month.  A 332-metre link between Lagos and El Morche was completed at a cost of €138,000.  About 90% of the entire walkway is already complete with a further stretch between Benajarafe and Chilches set to open shortly.

Sunday market

Nerja’s Sunday morning market re-opened on October 22 in the Almijara II urbanisation and is now managed by the Association of the Disabled of Malaga (ADISMA).  The group said that the event would be a “big boost to our association when it comes to creating employment for disabled people and people at risk of social exclusion.”  Prices for stall holders remain unchanged with 50% going to the Town Hall.

Winning waiter

Juan Linares from Nerja’s Plaza Cavana Café took home €600 by winning Nerja’s first-ever waiters’ race held during the town’s October Fair.  Over 60 competitors had to carry a tray of water cups, glasses and cans over a 600 metre course, the winner being the person carrying the most liquid at the end.  Each waiter wore black trousers and a teeshirt of the establishment where they work.
