No market confuses Vélez

Vélez-Málaga was in confusion last month as the promised new market failed to materialise.  In February, the “Portvelis” market was announced by the Town Hall to help boost town centre business with the first scheduled for March 17, followed by others at different sites.

However, on the promised day nothing happened at the venue, Plaza de las Carmelitas, in the town centre.  Consequently, the tourist information office was reportedly visited by dozens of disappointed customers some of whom had travelled from outside the municipality.  Staff then directed the would-be shoppers to two other sites, Plaza de la Constitución and San Francisco market, where they were disappointed again.

It seems that town hall had forgotten to tell anyone that the market that day had been cancelled because no-one had realised that the venue outside the town hall would be closed off on March 17 in preparation for Easter week events.

Now it seems the new market will get underway on April 21 instead, but it remains unclear why the cancellation of the original date failed to be communicated.
